Poker slang
There used to be a time when I was totally clueless when it came to expressions in poker. It was even more embarrassing since I was a fairly skilled poker player myself – I just didn’t have the terminology to apply it to. In secret, I tried to learn all of the new expressions that had been flowing over the poker table during the evenings, and slowly I learned most of them. For you who are in the same situation as me, and don’t know what is being meant with all the weird metaphors, this might be of service. Regard it a poker bonus:
Full Tub
This means that you have a full house. Like if you have two of a kind, and three of another. If you have a full house consisting of for example sixes and fours, you might call it “sixes full of fours”.
Window Dressing
This is when someone flashes a card from his or her closed hand by purpose.
Post-Mortem
This is the discussion that might arise afterwards. In a post-mortem, you discuss the game, what went right and what went wrong. Post mortem, as most of you probably knows, means after death.
Doyle Brunson
A hand in Texas Hold’em consisting of a 10 and a 2. Two years in a row Doyle Brunson became world champion with that combination of cards.
Whangedoodle
A whangedoodle is when you have a big hand (such as four of a kind) and have a round of jackpots after that.
Asian stud
Asian stud is a card game from Californa, in which you play five card stud, but with a stripped deck. As you know, there are many types of studs, among them seven card stud and New York stud.
Putting on the heat
To bet as aggressive as you can, basically. You want to put pressure on the other player, so you try to scare him or her off by raising and betting large.
Village People
Village people consists out of four queens. The hand, that is, not the disco group obviously The real group consisted out of an Indian, a police officer, a cowboy, a construction worker, a leather man – whatever that is - and a military man.
End Strippers
When you want to cheat, you can taper cards along the ends, so that you will recognize them. Then they are called “End strippers”. This is usually not a good idea…
